Cyclodextrins in Action
We are pleased to present the latest publication from our MSAGroup team titled "Influence of cyclodextrin structure on the thermo‑oxidative aging resistance of asphalt binder", published in the renowned journal Materials and Structures (IF = 3.9).
The research focused on the potential use of zeolites modified with cyclodextrins of different structures (α-, β-, and γ-CD) as carriers of the aqueous and oil phases, functioning as additives for asphalt binders.
Zeolites themselves are already well known in asphalt foaming technology, while cyclodextrins – thanks to their ability to interact with water molecules and organic compounds – are mainly used in adsorption and controlled release systems.
By leveraging the properties of both materials, we created a system that can act as an interfacial reservoir of water and oil phase, allowing regulation of water availability during the asphalt foaming process and limiting adverse changes occurring in the binder during aging.
This approach combines materials engineering with the concept of a circular economy – we use waste to create more durable infrastructure materials ♻️.
The publication was produced as part of the quality improvement program of Lublin University of Technology "Grants for Grants", no. 3/GnG2/2022.
