From Biochar to Sustainable Road Pavements – Fundamental Research for Low-Carbon Infrastructure
We are pleased to announce that a research project led by Szymon Malinowski has been awarded funding under the SONATA programme of the National Science Centre (NCN). The project will be carried out by a consortium of Lublin University of Technology and the Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with national and international research partners.
The core research team includes Piotr Batys, Wojciech Franus and Agnieszka Woszuk, whose expertise spans materials engineering, asphalt technology, surface chemistry, molecular modelling and advanced materials characterisation. This interdisciplinary combination of competencies provides a strong foundation for the successful implementation of the project.
The project focuses on the development of innovative carbon–organic composites for asphalt foaming applications. The research will investigate fundamental relationships between the chemical structure of the developed materials, foaming efficiency, gaseous emissions generated during asphalt mixture production, and the resistance of asphalt binders to ageing and environmental stressors. Advanced experimental techniques, molecular dynamics simulations and synchrotron-based characterisation will be employed.
