Ureolytic bacteria as a repair agent in cement mortars
An article by #MSAGroup members appeared in the journal Construction and Building Materials magazine. Title of the article “Diatomite and Na-X zeolite as carriers for bacteria in self-healing cementitious mortars”. Scientists conducted tests to determine the ability of cement mortars containing porous carrier materials impregnated with ureolytic bacteria to improve strength parameters and initiate crack self-repair processes. Research has shown that properly selected carrier materials can effectively promote the survival of bacterial spores in the environment of the cement matrix. The ability to heal cracks has been confirmed, among others, by by a crack surface repair (filling) factor of 93% and a compressive strength recovery factor of 33% for series containing biological repair agents.
